Siggi's Icelandic Skyr Yogurt

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

SiggiYogurtAt Whole Foods today I decided to branch out and try a new yogurt.

While browsing through dozens of organic, non-fat, low-fat, low-sugar, low-carb, low-you-name-it varieties, Siggi’s caught my eye. I started to read the front: “Icelandic-style skyr strained non-fat yogrt. Grade A. 0% Milkfat”. I wasn’t sure what that meant — Icelandic/Skyr yogurt? It sounded interesting. ::Turns Container:: “All natural. Milk from grass fed cows. No aspartame. No sucralose. No gelatin. No artificial colorings. No preservatives. No high fructose corn syrup”.

Next up were the nutrition facts. I compared them against the yogurt I usually get (Stonyfield’s Organic YoCalcium). Siggi’s had less sodium (65 vs 135), less carbs (13 vs 22), less sugar (10 vs 21) & more than twice the protein (7 vs 16)! Though it’s lacking in the potassium and calcium department, I eat enough dairy and fruit each day where it doesn’t really matter too much.

If you can get past Siggi’s being thick (which is what I found out Icelandic-style sky is) you might just be loving this very healthy strain of yogurt. Oh, you’ll also have to get past it costing 2x as much. You win some, you lose some….

Coffee Stupidity

Monday, March 16th, 2009

coffeecup2And so the caffeine detox has ended. On my way home from work I picked up an iced coffee… I just couldn’t take the sluggish feeling & headache any longer! Remind me never to try this again. Though I will stick to saying I need to continue drinking more water during the day & dive deeper into the world of tea, there’s just no way I could ever give up coffee, even for the purpose of a detox.

David Letterman just popped on the television — I can’t remember the last time I made it to 11:30 on a weeknight. I guess that bit of coffee-down-time did me good; I usually pass right out regardless of whether I’ve had a coffee or not.

(By the way, I love that the automatic Twitter sponsor of this post is “pregnancy date calendar”. How appropriate).

Caffeine Detoxification

Monday, March 16th, 2009

coffeecupYesterday I didn’t have any coffee. It wasn’t by choice, it just… happened. I know, I know, it’s awful, and I paid for it dearly today with an awful headache and absolutely no energy.

Here’s the deal.

This past Sunday I was up at 4:30am, then eventually fell back asleep, only to wake up at noon to ‘officially’ begin my day (note to readers: that never happens). From 12 to 6 I cleaned the house inside and out, took care of a few projects, and made some dinner. Before I knew it 10pm had rolled around. I settled in for the evening, worked on some web coding, and fell asleep. Fast forward to today — I drove to the train station and needed $4 to park (It’s quite common that when Monday rolls around I forget to get $1’s for parking). I was going to hit the ATM, grab a coffee to make change, and then head over to the lot. But then I remembered I had some change in a jacket pocket, so I just used that. While I was on the train I started to get an awful headache… And knew it had to be from the lack of caffeine running through my system. At that point I unfortunately began reading about the effects caffeine and caffeine withdrawal have on your body. After finishing, I thought it might be worth it to take 4 or 5 days off the cup o’ joe.

Don’t get me wrong — I couldn’t ever give it up completely! Though I do think I should be limiting my intake from my normal 3 cups a day to 1-2 at most.

I won’t bother you with all of the negative things I’ve read about coffee today, as I’d never want to ruin it for a fellow bean-lover, so I’ll leave it here for the time being. I’ll also keep you updated as I continue my no-coffee-quest this week.
